Signed carte de visite photograph of Simon Cameron Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln, from 1861-1862. 3.3 x 2.3 inch image on a 6.25 x 3.8 inch embossed mat. Choice extremely fine. Cameron signed in brown ink on lower portion of the light brown mat, which is lightly soiled. Cameron was a senator from Pennsylvania, Lincoln appointed him Secretary of War in March 1861, but demoted him to Ambassador to Russia in January 1862 due to allegations of corruption and lax management. Cameron made a political comeback after the Civil War, returning to the Senate in 1867 and his political machine would control Pennsylvania politics for the next 70 years.
