One of the surgeons present at the deathbed of Abraham Lincoln, Charles Henry Crane also witnessed Lincoln's autopsy along with Surgeon General Joseph K. Barnes. In 1866 he was named Assistant Surgeon General; upon Barnes retirement, was appointed Surgeon General of the U. S. Army. Choice dark ink signature "C. H. Crane / Assistant Surgeon General / U. S. Army." 7 x 3 inches. Crane's military career began in 1848, and he served in the Seminole War, the Mexican War, the Indian Wars, and the Civil War.
