For the last few months of Lincoln's life, William D. Crook was a guard at the White House. Armed with a revolver and brass knuckles, he dressed in plain clothes and accompanied the President whenever he left the White House. Crook published his stories "Through Five Administrations" (New York, Harper's, 1910). In it, he charged if guard John Parker had been at his post, Booth could not have killed Lincoln. Dated Feb. 15, 1910 on White House stationery, a handwritten (5 1/2 x 9 inch paper) letter by Crook to the publisher at Harper's. An elusive autograph.
