This stock certificate has certainly seen better days. But its connection to Mark Twain and Adolph Sutro make it most intriguing. Number 73 for 10 shares to Mrs. A. E. Irwin. A rare issue to a female. She actually ran her own business (ladies and children's clothing) in Virginia City. She lost her business in a fire suspiciously set by a tenant and employee! Datelined: Carson City, 1863. Signed by secretary P. W. Van Winkle and president Joel Bell. Incorporated Feb'y 2nd, 1863. Sunset vignette. Towne & Bacon printer. Location: Ball's Lode in the Brown & Murphy District, Lyon County, N. T. The principal offices of the companies are in Carson City. Fair condition: large hole below "Lion." Bottom has major rips and tears. The Lion seems to be located just above the Sutro Tunnel. Mark Twain, in an article in the Territorial Enterprise, gives us most of what we know about the Lion mine and the Brown & Murphy district. Background notes on Irwin, Ball and Van Winkle. Also a reprint of the Twain article. Sutro, Lyon Co. Nevada 1863 Fred Holabird Collection
