Very ornate bond issued by the state of Arkansas to the Little Rock & Fort Smith Railroad for $1,000. Not cancelled. Signed clearly by Powell Clayton as governor of Arkansas. After achieving the rank of general for the Union in the Civil War, Clayton was elected as Arkansas' first Republican governor in 1868 in an election many found corrupt. To protect freed slaves, Clayton brought in people from the North to serve in his cabinet. He also provided funding for many infrastructure projects, including railroads. His term was marked with post-War violence, forcing Clayton to declare martial law. After serving as governor, he was elected to the U.S. Senate (working with President Grant) and later served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico during the McKinley administration. Also signed by the secretary of state, treasurer and auditor. Four vignettes, including locomotive. Fifty-five coupons attached. Printed by American Bank Note Co. Folds with light toning around the edges. (Prag Collection) City: State: Arkansas Date: 1870 hwac# 33924
