Rarity 2. From Stacks' October 1998 sale lot #1764. MS62, but may be better after a bath. The next 4 popular tokens were apparently struck by F.H. Noble & Company of Chicago for Farran Zerbe to sell at the corresponding expositions. Zerbe operated the mint booth at the expositions and sold these tokens together with official mint issues. Contemporary coin dealer Thomas Elder criticized these issues as being light weight and poor quality gold and even issued satirical versions of the LPE tokens. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition was held in St. Louis, Missouri. The LPE tokens have LPEZ engraved on the fleur de lis, standing for Louisiana Purchase Exposition Zerbe. Only 1 die pairing is known of the round 1/4 token. However, the 14 star obverse was severely clashed twice and ground down each time. After the second grinding many details on the die were lost including 5 of the stars. New details were engraved on the die. In particular a new star was added to make a total of 10 stars. Because a star was added in a new location, the 10 star variety is considered distinct from the 14 star variety. Numerous details on the reverse were also re-engraved to create the 10 star variety.
