Allan Loughead and his brother Malcolm Loughead had operated an earlier aircraft company, Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company, which was operational from 1912 to 1920 in California and mainly a sightseeing airline. He changed the spelling of his name to Lockheed to make it easier to pronounce. In 1932, Robert Gross and other investors bought the Lockheed Aircraft Company from the bankrupt Detroit Aircraft Corporation, renaming it the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation.
