This Lorenz rifled musket in .58 cal. has a 37 3/8 in long barrel. The S/N is 3XR (please note the double digit serial number) and appears to be a very early unmolested all numbers matching Civil War Confederate firearm. The serial numbers are present on all three barrel bands, the brass butt-plate, trigger-guard, and side-plate escutcheon. The rifle has a cheek-piece with the letters "E" and "T" carved prominently into the stock. The "T" indicates that it was issued to infantry from the state of Tennessee. The rifle was manufactured in Austria and supplied to both Union and Confederate troops specifically to Wisconsin and Tennessee troops. The barrel is octagon at the breach to round and shows heavy re-working of the flats with possible proof-mark removal. The front sight is oval shaped to allow for bayonet installation while the rear sight is an unattractive lump of steel, but historically correct, for long range shooting. The lockplate is stamped with a proof mark at the rear of the plate and the numbers "860" forward of the hammer representing the year 1860 minus the first digit.

Hand engraved into the stock is "Sanford"; presumably Mr. Sanford carried this rifle into battle. State: City: Date: ID# 49640
