A true rarity comes to us from an historic California and Vermont family.
Lorino's Terrestrial Globe, Gilman Joslin, Boston, Revised, G.W. Boynton, 1860 dated outside the publisher's circle.
The globe is 12" diameter. The stand is 41" tall, original hand painted cast iron in gold and green tones, wheels concealed on the bottom.
The date of the data on the USA portion of the map appears to be approximately 1849, as it shows only Sacramento and Trinidad, both early gold rush sites, but shows no others, even though there is plenty of room. It shows all the California mission sites.
The globe comes from the family of California physician David Powell of Sacramento and Marysville during the 1860s. Another part of the family was Albert Knight Andross, which was where the silver Knight ingot of the 1860s we sold years ago came from.
The globe shows wear, perhaps typical of an item 160 years old. there are some scratches to the surfaces (not in USA) of the globe and outer info ring. All metal parts present, including tightening screws, and all otherwise in very good condition. There is a darkening of age (sometimes called patina) on the globe and outer info ring.
