Fraudulent! Inc. in Nebraska. No. 1513, issued for 500 shares on Nov. 14th, 1887. Signed by the president, Orson Hager, and secretary. Not cancelled. Three mining vignettes (one covered covered by a seal). Gilt RN facsimile underprint. Folds, punched along the bottom. In 1886, the owners of an extinct hot spring near Bear, Garland County, Arkansas, announced it as the fabulous "Lost Louisiana mine" a legend dating back to the late 1700s. The company sold stock as the "Lost Louisiana Mining Company." Frenzied investment in the district was propelled in part by crooked mineralogists and assayers, including the Reverend Samuel Aughey, a “first-class charlatan” and disgraced professor, and Anson C. Tichenor, an imposter mineralogist. When the Arkansas Geological Survey conducted an independent investigation of mineral claims in the Ouachita Mountains in 1888, they exposed the Lost Louisiana and many other mines as fraudulent.
