Lot of 3. Bozeman was incorporated as a town in 1874. Originally named Farmington, Bozeman was the county seat of Gallatin County. By the 1880s, Bozeman was a major center of population and business with towns such as Virginia City, territory capital, Helena, Diamond City, Deer Lodge City, and Missoula. (Information on Bozeman from Sanders, Helen. History of Montana, Vol I, 1913.) These certificates are all from the Eastern Montana Mining and Smelting Co. This company was located on Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone River in 1874.  Trouble with Indians in that region prevented any large-scale mining until 1877 when the Eastern Montana Mining and Smelting Company build smelting furnaces (Information from http://www.denverstockexchange.com/WesternMining.htm.) The company was incorporated on May 23, 1876. 1) Certificate No. 660 for 221 shares issued Mary S. Mendenhall and signed by A. B. McPherson and E. D. Ferguson, May 23, 1896. Black decorative and decorated border and green design in back. Company seal on bottom left. 2) Unissued certificate No. 741. Same as certificate above. 3) Cancelled certificate Number 474 for 146 shares issued to J. W. Pramis and signed by Sam Bariusdi and John (illegible), Oct. 11, 1890.
