A suite of early General Land Office Maps showing the advancement of the land Surveys. The lands here were considered remote and often unsurveyable.
The 1837 suite consists of three maps: the Southwestern district 12 x 16"; the St Helena District 5 x 9"; the Southeastern District 8.5 x 12"; and the Cherokee Cession in Alabama 9.5 x 6". At the time, Louisiana was relatively new to the United States having been acquired from France in 1803 and became a state in 1812. On the 1837 suite, no surveyor is shown, nor any towns. The survey of the state was in its very infancy.
Everything changed with the 1850 survey. 16 x 19". Here, unlike many of the other General Land Office surveys of 1850, Boyd has brought in much geo-political data. Many towns are shown (perhaps over 100), significant rivers, various land claims, areas of marsh, and so on. The state is divided into five districts, each outlined in color.
The 1852 map, 17 x 18", lacks any of the usual color. The level of surveyed lands has jumped significantly, reflecting a focus by the GLO to get Louisiana completed. There is even a notation of "fraudulent surveys."
the population of Louisiana at215,000 in 1830, grown to 352,000 in 1840, then to 517,000 in 1850, it is easy to see why the GLO concentrated efforts on LA.
