This is a rare 12-inch long solid bronze mini-mace or macette produced as a sales promotion piece by Medallic Art Company when it was located in Dayton, Nevada. The slightly tapered, 10.5-inch-long, solid bronze pillar has a matte finish and is topped by a 1.5-inch-diameter bronze medal with the words "MEDALLIC ART COMPANY" around the top and the date "1903" at the bottom surrounding a polished, possibly gold-plated, "French Head" logo of Medallic Art Company. Both sides are the same. The "French Head" logo was originally designed by American sculptor Daniel Chester French (hence the name) as one side of a 1917 medallion commemorating the opening of the Catskill Aqueduct. Medallic Art Company president Clyde C. Trees adopted the design as the logo for the company in 1932. The date of 1903 was often loosely used as the founding date of Medallic Art Company because it is thought to be the date that Henri Weil brought a Janvier Die Reduction Pantograph from France to use at the Deitsch Brothers, his employer at the time. The first known medallion produced by Henri Weil on the Janvier was in 1907, and Henri and his brother Felix legally incorporated Medallic Art Company in 1910. Even so, the 1903 date perseveres in Medallic Art promotional history. A ceremonial academic mace is a symbol of the authority and respect for the highest ranks of leadership at a school of higher learning. Typically a mace is carried at the front of a commencement procession of faculty and administrators ahead of the line of potential graduates, and it represents the office of the chancellor or president of the institution. In larger universities made up of multiple colleges and large departments, each college or department may be represented by its own mini-mace as that group enters the commencement venue. This is a unique and rare piece of Medallic Art Company history. State: City: Date:
