Mines at Leadville, Colo. (printed on right). Inc. in Colorado. No. 428, issued for 50 shares to R.A. Merrill on April 22nd, 1899. Signed by president RD Lawrence and secretary James Connolly. Not cancelled. Black fancy border and print. Silver seal. No vignette, but company logo has floral imagery and fancy fonts. Printed by Elgan Bank Note Co., Denver. 7 x 9.75" Folds, three crease corners. Very nice condition. The Mahala was successful since 1891, producing 150 tons of gold, silver, and lead ore per day. In 1899, the mine shaft was over 1100 feet deep. On February 2, 1906, a fire broke out in the shaft house and spread into the underground workings, burning for over 3 months. Damage in the shaft required ore to be brought to the surface through the Wolftone Mine. [Ref:https://www.mindat.org/sitegallery.php?loc=115272] () Ken Prag Collection
