Lot of 5 stocks issued during Maine's Silver Rush that took place 1878-1882. Silver (in galena) was first discovered in Sullivan, Maine in 1877. Speculation about the richness of the claims was fueled by the publication of the Maine Mining Journal in 1880. The Acton Mining District was one of the major districts. 1) The Gouldsboro Silver Mining Company. No. 331, issued in Gouldsboro, ME on June 28, 1880. Not cancelled. Underground hoisting vignette. Folds, toning. 2) Hall Mining Company of Bluehill, Maine. Low No. 6, issued for 100 shares in 1880 at Bluehill. Not cancelled. Folds. 3) The Clark Silver Mining Co. of Franklin (Ellsworth crossed out), Maine. No. 735, issued for 100 shares in Ellsworth on April 29th, 1880. Not cancelled. Small certificate with two mining vignettes. Folds. 4) Two unissued stocks for the Unity Mining Company (of Unity, Maine). 188- dateline. Both have a stunning hydraulic mining vignette that is very reminiscent of the Tuolumne Water Co. stocks. In other words, it's a Sierra Nevada scene.
