This sword was given to the Boswarth G.A.R. post by Major General Adelbert Ames early in the twentieth century. The sword had been given to Ames by the State of Maine citizens during the Civil War. Major General Ames was a remarkable man. He led the famous 20th Maine Infantry, became one of the civil wars youngest and most competent general officers. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and became Reconstruction Governor of Mississippi. He also served as a volunteer General in the Spanish American War, and, at his death in 1933, he was the last surviving Civil War general. General Ames married General Benjamin Butlers' daughter and is buried in Lowell, Mass. This sword is unique and one of the finest Civil War swords to come to light in a long time. This sword comes with strong provenance and is a most unique and beautiful piece of Civil War Americana. State: Maine City: Date: c.1860s FHWAC#: 40722
