Mogul MD. This stock certificate has a lot going for it. It was incorporated in Carson City, Nevada Territory. Territorial Nevada stock certificates are a rare commodity, but you never see one datelined Carson City. The stock is for the Mammoth Gold and Silver Mining Company, Mogul Mining District, El Dorado County (now Alpine County), California. What is a California stock doing being incorporated in Nevada? This is unheard of. The original seller presumed it had something to do with the Comstock. By 1862 the good mine sites were gone and prospectors scoured the surrounding areas for the next great payload. The Mogul Mining District fit that bill. Checking the records of Carson County, Utah and Nevada Territory one can find William H. H. Fall and George L. Gibson listed many times. They were indeed probably looking for that elusive great strike. Fall would be one of the investors of the new city called, "Truckee City." He was also known as the "Hero of Humboldt" [County]. Gibson ran the Ormsby after Major Ormsby's death at the Battle of Pyramid Lake. Later he ran the Sazerac Saloon. The stock certificate is issued to EC Hendrick for 24 shares at $100 a share in 1863. It is signed by secretary Wm. H. H. Fall and president George L. Gibson. Four vignettes adorn this certificate. The center shows a side-wheeler, steam and sailing vessel at sea. This is indeed a rare vignette. At left is an allegorical Lady Liberty holding an American flag; to the right is a sheaf of wheat; and at bottom a small vignette of a dog guarding a safe. 5 x 10." XF condition. Three vertical folds. Top right corner is slightly rounded. Three very small rips on bottom right. Additional information on the mine and mining district is included. Also Nevada historical backgrounds on the names on the certificate are included.
