Rare early Virginia copper mining certificate. Inc. in Virginia, 1853. No. 108, issued for 100 shares to George Manley in New York on June 29, 1853. Signed by the president and cashier (illegible). Pen cancelled. Black border and print, red seal, and vignette of mine with locomotive passing by. Printed by Robertson & Seibert, NY. 8 x 9.75" Folds, creases. According to 1853 newspaper articles, this company was a copper mine in Fauquier County, Virginia, 70 miles from Alexandria. Just a few weeks before our stock was issued, they put out a help wanted ad in New York for 30 experienced miners.
