This is a Manhattan Arms Co. 12 ga. side by side hammer shotgun with 20 in. regulated barrels. This is a unique shotgun because it appears to have been made special order for 20 in. barrels. This is a single purpose firearm marked on the bottom of the receiver "U.S. MARSHAL 15" with a gang stamp where the S and A and L have slight drops compared to the string of letters. It is also marked on the buttstock" US MARSHAL/ S. TEXAS /15". The gun is chambered for 12 gauge shells without any forcing cone or chamber. It has rebound hammers, double triggers, S/N "232" with a bench number of "47" marked on the forearm, barrels, and water-table. C. 1877. The barrels are Damascus marked "Belgian Laminated Steel" on the rib. A beautiful twist steel is seen under heavy but even patination. The buttstock has a crack at the wrist which would preclude any idea of every shooting this gun. There is a piece missing from the pistol grip cap as well. There is no provenance to this firearm, however there is compelling evidence that this shotgun was made for close range self-defense purposes only. Black powder shotguns of this period normally had 30-34 in. barrels to obtain any reasonable velocity. The firearm is Belgian proofed for black powder only and "NON POUR BALLE", not for use with ball ammunition. Both hammers are original and the action works perfectly. 36.25 in. overall length. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. This is an antique, non FFL firearm.
