Manufacturers & Traders Bank, Buffalo, NY $1 Bank Note, Haxby G2a. All of the manuscript written in pen ink has been "washed" out. Printed by Danforth, Wright & Co., NY and Phila. This bank note is exceptional for having been underwater for a century and a half, and is one of the best condition of all eleven bank notes found in the purser's safe on the SSCA. It is clear that the note was once folded into small segments to fit into a wallet. This bank was in business when the SSCA sank off the coast of North Carolina in 1857. Unlike many other banks, we did not find record of any counterfeit notes from this bank circulating in the 1857 period.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
