1853 map of the southwest U.S. from Fort Smith to the Rio Grande River and includes parts of Texas, New Mexico, Mexico, Kansas, and Arkansas. The purpose of the map was used for "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean." It was created by the War Department of the United States under the direction of Jefferson Davis, the Secretary of War at the time, as well as Lieut. A. W. Whipple and Lieut. J. C. Ives, both Topographical Engineers. Frame dimensions: 24.75" h x 52.75" w.
