Antique wooden jointed Marionette Puppet. Possibly 19th Century. Hands and face are painted white, wooden boots are painted brown. Articulated joints with some original metal hardware. Puppet has been repaired with modern screws visible in some joints. Small plastic bag included with antique nails/tacks, Only clothing is a hand-sewn tan jacket that appears to be modern. Measures approx. 15" tall. Lot also includes modern wooden jointed doll, unpainted, attached to base with metal rod.
Historically, the marionette played an important role in European culture, peaking in popularity and variety in the late 18th & 19th Centuries. The Marionette is the most advanced type of puppet; it is capable of imitating almost every human or animal gesture and Marionette artists and puppeteers were considered talented craftsman and entertainers well into the 20th Century.
