Common stock certificate # A576 for 40 shares dated March 2, 1880 made out to Fred Brumagin. Signed by Mark Brumagim, Vice President, and by Robert Cranford, Asst. Secretary. Incorporated on June 25, 1863 and capitalized at $10,000,000; 100,000 shares at $100 each. Vignette at top center of allegorical woman, seated next to a bear, and men farming in the background. “Eureka” is printed at the woman’s feet. Orange border, black print. Uncancelled. Printer: National Bank Note Co. Datelined New York. 8 x 12.5.” The company had also issued preferred stock at $5,000,000; 50,000 shares at $100 each issued as a similarly designed certificate except printed with a blue border. Solomon Heydenfeldt, a well-known San Franciscan attorney and former California State Supreme Court Justice, was President of the company. This company was one of several established from part of the original Rancho Las Mariposas estate, a Spanish land grant owned by John C. Fremont, which he had purchased from Juan Alvarado in the 1840s. In the 1880s it was reorganized as the Mariposa Mining & Commercial Company. Prag Collection
