Lot of 2. Rare Bonanza Kings pairing of Mariposa Mill Company Checks with RN-B16a imprinted revenue. 1) Check to Virginia & Gold Hill Water Co., 1870, signed by Comstock millionaire John Mackay. Spindle hole, large tape repair on left border. 2) Check to Reese & Browning, 1870, signed by Comstock millionaire James G. Fair. Spindle hole, some staining. The Mariposa Mill was located at the head of Sevenmile Canyon, south of the Sierra Nevada Mine. It was built in 1862 and controlled by William Sharon and the Bank of California in the late 1860s before Mackay, Fair, and the "Bonanza Firm" took it over. In 1871 (about the time of these checks), it was milling ore from the Hale & Norcross Mine. [Ref: Ansari] Virginia City Nevada
