Lot of 8: 4 different pairs of Mackay/Fair signatures. John Mackay and James G. Fair were two of the four millionaire members of the "Bonanza Firm," the mining group that took control of the Comstock in the 1870s with the help of the Big Bonanza discovery. Mackay was a well respected mining superintendent. Fair was also a US Senator. This is a fantastic group! The Mariposa Mill was located at the head of Sevenmile Canyon, south of the Sierra Nevada Mine, and north of Virginia City. Kelley reports on it in 1862. By 1867, the Bank of California/William Sharon ring owned it and it was called the California Mill. In 1871-72, it was again known as the Mariposa Mill and was processing ore from the Hale & Norcross. By 1873, it was under the control of Mackay & Fair.
