3 different types of Market Street Railway Co cancelled stock certificates with eagle vignette and company seal: 1) Blue (4 stocks) 100 shares each all issued Standard Power & Light Corp. Dated & countersigned Dec 30, 1927. 2) Orange (2 stocks) 3) Green ( 4 stocks). Franchise for Market Street Railway was granted in 1857 to Thomas Hayes. First horse car line to opened in San Francisco on July 4, 1860, as the Market Street Railroad Company. Line was converted to steam power a few years later using steam dummy locomotives pulling a trailer car. Competition, labor troubles and a bad accident in 1918 led to the company reorganizing. Continued to operate electric streetcars throughout the city, the Powell St. cable car lines, and a growing fleet of buses.
