The Market Street Railroad was chartered by Thomas Hayes in 1857. It opened in 1860 as a horsecar and steam train line. Leland Stanford took over in 1882 (Market Street Cable Railway Co.) and incorporated cable cars and cable power. In 1893, Southern Pacific Railroad took over (Market Street Railway Co.) and converted to electric streetcars. 1902 saw the switch to United Railroads, who eventually consolidated to just the Market Street Railway Co. They were known in the 1920s for painting the front of their cars white to combat problems caused by fog. In 1944, the city muni took over the company.
