1977 U.S. Assay Medal, Pewter MS65 NGC. OBVERSE: Portrait of Martha Washington facing right with legend "ANNUAL ASSAY COMMISSION" above. Flanking inscriptions are "1977" & "MARTHA WASHINGTON". On the truncation "E GROVE " & "P FOWLER". The obverse portrait is from the pattern half dollar struck in the early 1960s to test metallic replacements for silver. REVERSE: View of the first Mint with "FIRST UNITED STATES MINT" & "1792" above & "PHILADELPHIA" below. "MP" (Matthew Peloso) at lower left & "F GASPARRO" at lower right. SIZE: 76 mm x 60 mm (oval); COMPOSITION: Pewter. ENGRAVER: Phillip Fowler & Edward Grove (obverse); Frank Gasparro (reverse). The U.S. Mint struck the Pewter Medal in 1977 to commemorate the Annual Assay Commission, utilizing advanced minting techniques & precision craftsmanship. [
