Lot of 21 checks from The Montana Company, Limited, in Marysville, Montana, issued in 1886. 3.75" x 8.5" with varying levels of soiling. Marysville was at one time the largest producer of gold in Montana. The original claim which became the district's most successful mine, the Drumlummon, was discovered in 1876 by Thomas Cruse. Cruse named the mine after his Irish homeland. He got help to develop the vein and news spread quickly of the richness of the find. A London based company bought the Drumlummon from Cruse in 1882 and formed The Montana Company, Limited. Cruse had success in banking and eventually reinvested in Marysville mining. At one time, the town boasted as many as 4,000 residents. Legend has it that Cruse named it Marysville because of the first female resident, Mary Ralston.
