A matched pair of .54 caliber Model 1842 pistols marked ”U.S./H.Aston&Co.’ on the lock plate in front of the hammer and marked "MIDD tn CONN 1851" to the rear of the hammer. Organized in 1843, Henry Aston & Co. built a factory in Middleton, Connecticut and in 1845 received a contract to manufacture 30,000 Model 1842 pistols which were produced from 1846-1852. These were similar to the Model 1836 flintlock pistol, but were modified to use a percussion lock. The captured ramrod was essential for horsemen to prevent dropped ramrods at awkward times. Inspectors’ marks are visible on the left side of the barrel and the date ‘1851’ again appears on top of the barrel tang. Dragoons and Mounted Riflemen had all been issued 1842 pistols, but some were replaced by the 1847 Colt Walker Revolver. Manufactured after the Mexican American War, these 1851 dated pistols saw only limited service by Calvary troopers during the Civil War, but were still carried by civilians during the Indian Wars period. One pistol has a crack in the wood to the rear of the lock plate, but otherwise these two pistols are in excellent shape. Included is a rare original brass tipped pair of Pommel Holsters which were used for everything from single shot pistols to Colt Dragoons and even Colt Walkers. It has been modified by previous users to accommodate different saddles and pistols and shows extensive period repairs. The holsters' "Flap Covers" have been removed, which is not unusual when carrying two large, heavy pistols. The fact that they were for Calvary use only, with a low production and extensive use prior to and during the Civil War, makes original Pommel Holsters very RARE today. City: State: Date: ID# 38121
