Pass no. 31, issued to Isaac McQuilking of the LVRR. Signed by supt. HJ Mumford. Black and red print on cardstock with great vignette of railroad car at the bottom of steep tracks leading up a hill. Printed by Rand, McNally & Co. The Mauch Chunk and Summit Railroad was a coal-hauling railroad in the mountains of Pennsylvania that operated between 1828 and 1932. Built by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. The downhill trip continued to be powered by gravity. The uphill track was equipped with a ratchet which would prevent a car that detached from the cable from running away downhill. This invention later evolved into the anti-rollback device used on roller coasters!
