Lot of five items. Four small, crudely formed head fragments made out of clay and mounted on small squares painted gold with green felt applied to bottom. Two of the have separated from mounting and are clearly broken off heads. One larger pottery statue of a Mayan/Aztec God-like figure with large feathered head dress. The larger statue measures approximately 8" in height, while the smaller head fragments are 1" to 2.5" in height, not counting the bases. These artifacts have no known provenance but strongly resemble pre-columbian Mayan anthropomorphic figures known to be found in ancient burial sites near Chihuhua, Mexico in the Copper Canyon region, dating back around 1,500 years. The crudely formed heads were clearly sculpted without the use of molds and are remarkably similar to the Tlatico figurines found in central Mexico that date back before the Aztec Empire. The Tlatico sculptors paid close attention to the hairstyle or headdress on clay figurines, which resembles these heads, as they each have a distinctive "do". Further research and expert authentication is warranted for this very interesting lot of possibly very ancient, collectible South American clay artifacts.
