This cavalry saddle is a McClellan model 1885 with an A.D. Laidley Ordinance Inspection stamp. Laidley inspected leather goods for the Ordinance Dept. as early as the Civil War through the Indian Wars such as this saddle. The saddle has hoods on the stirrups marked "US" and there is a brass tag at the pommel marked "11 in.". This saddle has a considerable amount of tack to go with it: two canteens 1870s, 1880's vintage complete with stoppers and chains, a tin cup marked "US" on the handle part # "395-34-7799" with the officer's initials "JL" scribed into the loop, saddle bags stamped "US" with bag liners, a picket line with stake, a model 1886 Rock Island Arsenal scabbard for the issued .45-70 (.45-60) Springfield carbine with brass cap, a cavalry issued wool blanket, bedroll, canvas tent, "US 1887" marked bridle Schoemaker bit, a feed bag marked "USQMC". None of the tack has been disassembled from the waxed cotton bags they are currently stored in. There is a stencil of "53"small font, and "23" large font in white on the tent bag. All in very good condition. Please see photos for details. Extra shipping may apply. (ref. Saddles, Beate, p. 323, K.O.)
