McKinley US Mint Medal: A rare silver example of an unlisted U.S. Mint struck in 1901(?) commemorating the assassination of President McKinley. At first glance it appears to be the U.S. Mint list medal PR-124, except that the obverse die is similar to that used on the Assay Commission medals of 1898 and 1899. The die differs from the assay commission die as the left truncation of the bust extends into the beaded border whereas the assay commission die truncates before the beaded border. Stack's Bowers sold a mint state silver example in May 2019 for $2,280 noting it was the first they had handled. A bronze example sold in March 2021 for $384 noting that it was only the second example of this die combination they had handled. Worthy of a place in an advanced collection. Silver, 76.9mm, AU+.
