Number 172 for 50 shares to Simon Bowman June 14, 1881. Dateline Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Incorporated October 20, 1879. Signed by secretary John Irvine (of the company name) and president JW Hunter. Frank McMahon is the McMahon. Not cancelled. Cut close on left and one horizontal fold. All-in-all excellent condition. Grantsville (town is misspelled on the certificate) is located a couple of miles south of Berlin, Nevada. Gold was discovered here as early as 1863. The town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant. The two mining districts in the area at that time were called Union and North Union. Background notes on Grantville and the McMahon and Irvine mine.
