Overall frame size 44" x 37" Art size 35" x 29" Muller's classic Red buffalo mark at lower right without signature. Dan Muller.
This is the first painting described by Dan Muller in the original Town House Menu, owned by Charlie Rennie, painted in 1935 and hung that year.
The painting was a great way to introduce the high Sierras to new customers, showing the Sierra Nevada range as a setting for the two most prominent wild animals here, the bear and horse. Here, Muller plays the part of the baby colt in Muller's text. The fantastical and perhaps mythical part is that the wild horses almost never crossed from the Virginia Range over to the Sierra Nevada range, though they do join is several places between Reno and Carson City. The bears, meanwhile, do inhabit both ranges.

As an intro into the paintings, Muller comments: "Bein' as how I'm always hungry, wha d'ye say we break trail fer the' dinin' room with its soft lights on 'the tables and eats that makes me think as how I'm a-feedin' in hoss heaven."

"As you enter the' dinin'-room, on your right, or, the' east wall, the' first picture shows me an' my mammy a-feedin' ... the' high Sierras in the' background ..."
So this was the very first painting he introduced folks to at the Town House. It was an interesting lead-up to what was to come.
The painting was partially restored in 1979 and 1982. Muller's original signature in the red buffalo may have been inadvertently cleaned off at that time. It has been owned by one of the original Town House owners continuously, in storage since 1982. Comes with a photo copy of the original menu.
