Issued to B. M. Hypes, M. D. Signed by A Steele and (?). Dr. Hypes has purchased one share for $25.00. Rough condition, but a nice medical certificate for an important midwest doctor. Benjamin M. Hypes graduated from McKendree University in 1866. He later attended Rush Medical College in Chicago, continuing his medical studies at the St. Louis Medical College, where he graduated in 1872. In 1890, he was one of the founders of the Marion Sims-Beaumont College of Medicine in St. Louis. This school was not long-lived, but its legacy lives on today. By 1903, St. Louis University had been without a medical school since 1854. Its original medical school was founded in 1836, but was separated from the university due to pressure from the anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic Know-Nothing political party in the 1850s. It was in 1903 that the Marion Sims Beaumont College became a part of St. Louis University. Dr. Hypes, a St. Clair County native, can be considered one of the founders of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He remained on the faculty of school until his death in 1924.
