Beautiful Nevada Territorial stock certificate issued at Virginia, N.T. to Philip S. McDonald for 20 shares, May 26th, 1863. Signed by J.L. Van Bokkelen as president and N.T. Smith as secretary. Vignette of an eagle in a nest and a dog at the bottom. Pink background with adhesive revenue at the left. The Medina is not shown on the Becker map of 1882. General Jacob Van Bokkelen was a member of the original Territorial council, and a Virginia City resident in the early 1860's. He was later an agent for explosives powder, a job which led to his death in June 1873 when nitroglycerin he was storing in a Virginia City building detonated and killed 10 people. None of the others are listed in the San Francisco or Nevada directories of the period. The company is listed in Collins with Jacob's brother William listed as secretary. Endorsed on the back, but uncancelled. Very fine.
