Melones and Stanislaus Gold, Silver & Copper Mining Company stock certificate No. 542, incorporated in California on October 29, 1862. Issued to Samuel C. Bigelow for 5 shares ($50 per share) on June 5, 1863 in San Francisco. Signed by J.M. Byrne (president). Vignette shows mountain landscape with camp near a river. Drouaillet lithograph printer. 9.5x5.5". Revenue stamp.

This a very rare certificate from Calaveras County. During the gold rush, placer gold was first discovered in the county along the banks of the rivers and streams, including the Stanislaus River. In the 1850's, quartz-hosted gold was discovered. This certificate dates to 1863, a time that is considered intermittent in terms of productivity in the area but before the consolidation of the mines during the 1880's. An article from the Sacramento Daily Union, dated 27 April 1863 (vol. 25, no. 3774) reported that a week prior, Don Gabriel struck a quartz vein richer than Carson Hill - notably, Carson Hill was known as Melones and Stanislaus Flat in its early days.
