5 articles recovered from the Easton trunk found at the S.S. Central America shipwreck. 1.) Ansel Easton's Undershirt. Heavy stain, silk reinforced button-down, which is offset to the right (not in the center). Length 23", sleeve 18 including three inch form fitting cuff. No tears or holes. 2.) Men's pants. Three cloth covered, 3/4" diameter, button fly, three buttons present. Reinforced waist area, open fly below the buttons. Tie in back along the waist. 4" form fitted ankle cuff. Overall length 39", leg inseam 26", waist appx 34". Stain generally good. 3.) Two pair of white cotton socks with form-fitting upper closure. Un-stretched foot 9", heel to top of sock 9.5" Material is sound in both pair. One pair is marked // (illegible) X c // (uppercase X in the middle and a lowercase c). 4.) As the ship was sinking, passengers prepared to board lifeboats or perhaps go directly into the sea as a last measure. If one was going into the sea, it would be wise to not be overburdened with excess clothing that would get wet and become heavy, with the possibility of drowning under the excess weight. Which brings us to this partial pair of long underwear, which may have belonged to Mr. Easton. It is quite possible that these legs were cut off of a pair of long underwear for this purpose. Straight cut edges are at the thigh end of this garment, with clean cuts. One leg is 30" long, the other leg is 24" long. Both legs have degradation and stains. 5.) Ansel Easton's Handkerchief, 17 x 18 inches. Stained, but the material appears sound. No monograms or other markings. Possibly linen with a border edge of parallel lines, about 2" into center. Nice condition.
