3 articles of clothing recovered from the John Dement trunk found at the S.S. Central America shipwreck. 1.) Brooks Bros. wool work shirt. Brooks Brothers logo showing a sheep suspended by a ribbon surrounded by the words // MERINO / FINISH // is still visible in the lower right (as worn) corner of the shirt. Shoulder-to-waist distance is 27 inches, sleeve length from the back center of the neck opening is about 32 inches. Torso width is 15 inches. Today, these shirts would be considered a size "small" considering that they may have shrunk underwater. Wrists are close-fitting and the neck opening is offset to the right of center (as worn) and has three small button. The neckline appears to be hand-stitched in an X pattern, and the bottom hem is only tack-stitched every half-inch or so. All three shirts were neatly folded together in the trunk, and over more than a century on the seafloor, dark brown, orange, and black stains leached from other items in the trunk have colored these originally white shirts with a beautifully symmetrical "tie-died" pattern. Each shirt has a unique color pattern. The fabric is still supple and seems durable. 2.) Men's scarf. Size is 5x47". Degradation along center fold. 3.) Collar with center hole with no buttons. 3.5x15". No apparent degradation, just stained.
