5 articles of clothing recovered from the Easton trunk found at the S.S. Central America shipwreck. 1.) One of Ansel Easton's vests. 5 button holes, buttons intact, rounded lapel. Two lower pockets, left upper watch pocket. Horizontal pattern in fabric. Tie in lower back, buckle gone. Significant wear inside right arm area (this was found on another of Easton's vest as well). Dark vertical pin stripes on a dark background. Overall length 23", Stained. 2.) Two pair of Ansel Adams socks, generally in good condition, little wear, if any, 8" toe to heel, 13" heel to top. Fitted ankle. Maintains much of original color. 3.) Men's dress shirt. light material, three button front, pleated upper front, and pleated beneath the center waist. Stained. Two button cuff with button remnants. Usual split side seams. 13". Degradation at bottom of tails. overall length 31", sleeve inseam 22". Neck about 12-14". Stained. Serious degradation, left side. 4.) Men's cravat, 2 x 50" long, degraded. Gold metallic thread with dark square pattern. 5.) Men's pants of Ansel Easton. Heavy material, square patterns in the fabric. Dark red hue, easily visible art cuff area on the outside and on the inside. Suspenders with pants, probably attached, removed for conservation. maker mark of Wyman & Co., 550 Broadway, New York, New York, USA. Waist 35", inseam 25". Generally good condition. Watch pocket accessible above right pocket. Square button-down pocket corners. Starp with buckle in back waist. This is one of two articles marked (found so far) with Wyman's imprint on the inside face of the watch pocket. It represents a conundrum, as the address on the formatted print clearly states 550 Broadway, but every entry we found in Trow's New York Directory from 1850-to 1858 shows Wyman at 256 Broadway. Further of interest is that various jewelry companies occupied the 550 Broadway space starting with Andrewes & Brother in 1855, then switching to Tiffany & Co. about the time of the SS central America disaster. We cannot explain the discrepancy, other than the possibility of Wyman having his tailoring business at 256 Broadway and a retail outlet at 550 with the famous jewelers.
The fact that the suspenders were packed with the pants indicates to us that these pants were possibly quickly packed. In most all other cases, individual items were packed separately within this Easton trunk, which is clearly his trunk, and Addie had a separate trunk. It may thus be surmised he took off these pants and changed into another more favorable pair of pants for the hopeful (and successful) rescue attempt.
