Fine dress overcoat recovered from the trunk of John Dement recovered from the S.S. Central America Shipwreck. Overcoat has a velveteen collar and brushed cotton-twill body. Insulation lined, double-breasted, cloth-covered buttons with some cloth button coverings separate. Single leather glove rolled up may have come out of the pocket upon conservation by Ohio State University. Length about 36", arm inseam 19". One inside breast pocket, no external pockets. This was most probably an expensive item in 1857, not the usual overcoat. John D. Dement was a former Oregon City, Oregon, hardware merchant, partner with his brother William. Oregon City was the terminus of the Oregon Trail, thus those coming West all ended up there as the central "meeting point" before moving on elsewhere. This included California Gold Rush miners as well as Oregon gold miners. It was the place where the famous Oregon Beaver gold coins were minted just four years before John Dement joined his brother, who appears to have been in Oregon City when the Oregon Gold "Beavers" were used as currency.
