Purchased circa1855 antique men's velvet vest dress vest. Hand-sewn dark brown velvet with paisley pattern in dark blue, tan and rust colors. Durable linen/cotton reverse is tan in color. Ties in the back. Two waist pockets and one smaller breast pocket on left side (for pocket watch) 6 hard rubber buttons marked on reverse: N.R. Co. Good Years P=T. These buttons are very scarce. According to Carol, whose website is Vintagebuttons.net, these are hard rubber buttons made by Novelty Rubber Co. Good Year's P=T indicates they were Patented in 1851 and probably manufactured in 1854 or 1855. The website states: "During the life of the patent Charles Goodyear held (rubber hardening process), all buttons made of hard rubber had to carry evidence of his patent. Many carry just the word Goodyear's and "P=T", an abbreviation for Patent and the year 1851." Handwritten note in left waist pocket reads: "Your great grandfatherr's (C. C. A. Stubbeir) vest bought in 1855 or 1856." [
