A group of 5 certificates of membership in the Merchant's Exchange of St. Louis. Four are from 1882 and one is from 1895. All have some damage including paper loss and staining. Nice vignettes of a river scene at the top and of the exchange itself towards the bottom. The Merchants Exchange founded in 1836 was the first commodity trading exchange in the United States—predating the Chicago Board of Trade. The Exchange made a last gasp in 2000/2001 to conduct computerized trading of futures trading of freight on the Mississippi River. It has quietly ceased operation (wikipedia). All of the certificates are stamp cancelled.
