The success of the American Express Company and Wells Fargo & Co. lead to the birth of competitive express companies. The Merchants Union Express Co. emerged in 1866 and began a war with the big express companies. For two years, Merchants and American Express battled for dominance in the express world. In 1868, the companies merged and formed the American Merchants Union Express Company. This is stock no. 5610, issued to Levi Moore for 20 shares on November 7, 1867. It was signed by Secretary J.N. Knapp, Treasurer William C. Beardsley and President. Although the signature for the president is extremely faded and difficult to make out, it is possible that it could be the signature of Elmore P. Ross. This company was organized under the laws of the state of New York. It has a 5c revenue stamp, located on the lower left corner. This stock was good for 200,000 shares in capital stock. The vignette features an express carriage and locomotive with the name "Merchants Union Express Co." on the sides. It measures 12" x 8.40." The stock has some wear including creases, tears and fading. There is a cancellation mark over the signature of the president.
