Vignette features an express carriage and locomotive in background with the name "Merchants Union Express Co." on the side. Ship shown in harbor. Five cent revenue stamp. Has some toning evidence of tri-fold, no tears, Printed: Hatch & Co. 111 Broadway N.Y. Assigned. 9x11.5". Merchants Union Express Co. emerged in 1866 and began a war with the big express companies. For 2 years Merchants and American Express battled for dominance in the express world. In 1868, the companies merged and formed the American Merchants Union Express Co. Good deal of money had been spent to create an express network leading to price war. American Express bought Merchants Union with an issuance of new stock to end war and keep the express business.
