Ultra rare. Location: Virginia Mining District (printed at top). The stock actually says "On Mt. Davidson" which we haven't seen before. The dateline ("City of Virginia, N.T.") is also unique. No. 19, issued for 25 shares to company president Thomas Seale on May 14th, 1863. Signed by Seale and by secretary J. Ryan. Not cancelled. Blue print on creme paper, eagle vignette. Red 1,000,000 underprint. Enterprise Print (during the time Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain was working at the Enterprise at this time). Signed on the back by Seale and witnessed James Anderson. Ansari reports that in 1865 Seale and Anderson owned a 15 stamp mill 3/4 mile south of Gold Hill. It was built in 1862 as a 5 stamp mill. It was later known as the Atlas Mill. Folds, pinholes, heavy toning, creases, rough bottom edge. Listed in the 1864 Collins Directory with T. Shea as secretary and office at 62 South C Street in Virginia City. James Anderson was involved as a miner and in mining in Territorial Nevada. He and Seale were business partners. Thomas Seale appears to have encountered serious legal trouble in 1859 in California before he came to the Comstock. His brother Henry and he got into a land feud with the Shore Brothers in Santa Clara County that ended in a murder. Thomas tried to eject one of the Shore brothers, Paul, whom he considered a squatter. An altercation broke out and Paul was shot and killed. Thomas turned himself in and was later found not guilty. He then went to the Comstock and even Australia before returning to California. Read the whole story in "The History of Santa Clara County" by Sawyer. They seem to have been uneducated and rather crass as this ad in the Territorial Enterprise hints at, "A mean, contemptible half-breed thing...this dirty, lying mongrel...which the 'thing' failed to do...." Additional information on the Seale, mine and mining district is included.
