The Metropolis Improvement Company was proposing the sale of town lots in 1913 in this remote area of Elko County. The Southern Pacific built a train station (pictured) and an irrigation system was built to accommodate 12,000 acres of farmland. An elaborate hotel was also built, The Hotel Metropolis, the most modern Hostelry in Nevada. A small map of Metropolis is also enclosed inside the front cover showing town lots and streets. 8 pp. with eight black and white photos.
Metropolis was located 14 miles N.W. of Wells, Nevada. The project was on the drawing board in 1909 by the Pacific Reclamation Company of New York. In 1911, irrigated land was selling at $75 per acre and town lots from $100-$300. The S.P. built an eight-mile rail spur from it's main line at Tulasco. A 100 foot high dam was built in 1912 with large canals. At the end of 1912, there were 700 residents in the town, 2/3 of them Mormon. Farmers in Lovelock filed a lawsuit against the Pacific Reclamation Company from using the water from certain creeks in the headwaters of the Humboldt. This limited the water supply to only about 4,000 acres. This pretty much killed the whole plan and the Pacific Reclamation Company went into receivership in 1913. Those that remained farmed the area until the 20's growing wheat, potatoes and dairy farming. The Hotel Metropolis burned down in 1936 and the post office closed in 1942 (Paher). There is some water damage to the front cover, but the inside text and photos are unaffected. This is a rare piece.
