Antique Micmac Native American split ash sewing basket with curls and lid. 36" high x 13" diameter. Lower basket is open and upper basket is lidded. This piece is in excellent condition with a lovely patina. Also included, is a smaller vintage Micmac Indian splint ash sweetgrass lidded basked. 6" high x 7" diameter. Mi'kmaq or Micmac are the northernmost and most divergent of the Eastern Algonquian. MiÕkmaq First Nations People in Atlantic Canada draw on the natural world to provide the plant and animal fibres and dye sources necessary for their basketry. This extensive knowledge of surrounding resourcesÐ seasonal gathering times, preparation methods and weaving techniques to use with specific materialsÐhas evolved over the years with demographic, economic and environmental shifts.
